Introduction

Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security.

Installation

  • Install necessary packages:
opkg install polipo tor
  • Edit /opt/etc/tor/torrc (uncomment the following strings):
SOCKSPort 9050 # Default: Bind to localhost:9050 for local connections.
SOCKSPort 192.168.1.1:9100 # Bind to this address:port too.
RunAsDaemon 1
DataDirectory /opt/var/lib/tor
  • Edit /opt/etc/polipo/config  (uncomment and change the following strings):
proxyAddress = "0.0.0.0"    # IPv4 only
allowedClients = 127.0.0.1, 192.168.1.0/24
socksParentProxy = "localhost:9050"
socksProxyType = socks5
dnsQueryIPv6 = no
dnsUseGethostbyname = yes
  • Start tor and polipo:
/opt/etc/init.d/S28polipo start
/opt/etc/init.d/S35tor start

Using Tor

Configure your web browser. For example, Firefox:

Visit https://check.torproject.org/ to check if you got it right.
